Be Healthy With Diabetic Diet During Gestational Diabetes

Gestational diabetes is a medical disorder where patient have high blood sugar during pregnancy. Diabetic diet for gestational diabetesis an effective way to control high blood sugar as your body gets the sugar through what you eat. Glucose is a simple sugar formed when much of the food and drink that we take is decomposed in the digestive system. Glucose is very important as it gives energy to the body to help achieve all physical tasks. Glucose is utilized by the body to generate energy with the assistance of insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas. Only with the help of insulin glucose is able to enter the cells in your body which is used to produce energy and continues to remain in your blood. This makes your blood sugar to increase. When the body produces little or no insulin or is not able to properly use the insulin produced the sugar level in the blood becomes very high. This state is known as diabetes.

Gestational diabetes results due to hormonal changes occurring during pregnancy. During this time certain hormones made in the placenta restrict the insulin from managing the glucose level in the body creating a condition that is known as insulin resistance. The placenta is the organ which connects the baby to the uterus by the umbilical chord which permits nutrients to pass from the mother to the baby. As time progresses the placenta grows larger and produces higher levels of hormones which in turn increase insulin resistance.

During this period of time mother’s pancreas generates nearly three times of normal amount of insulin to overcome insulin resistance. When sufficient amount of insulin is not produced for overcoming the effect created by increased hormone levels it results in high blood glucose and gestational diabetes.

High levels of blood glucose during pregnancy need to be treated promptly. If not it can bring about problems both for the child and the mother too. Even though, gestational diabetes does not make baby diabetic but if not treated in time the baby may produce more insulin and gain more weight. This carries the risk of a premature birth.

Blood glucose levels once again achieves to normal after delivery in gestational diabetes. There is greater chance for a women who is suffering from gestational diabetes to develop diabetes mellitus type II at a later stage.

Diabetic diet is of vital importance to check high blood sugar levels in a pregnant woman. Carbohydrates in foods with high starch content and sugar cause the greatest impact on glucose levels. Make sure that you eat proper amount of carbohydrates at the same time everyday and see that you have included proteins as well as some unsaturated fats in your meal.

It is suggested to eat small meals and snacks evenly spread whole day with the same quantity of carbohydrate taking care to refrain from deep fried or extremely fatty food. It is recommended that you include high fiber content food like pasta, whole grain bread, cereals, rice, vegetables and fruits in your diet. Gestational diabetes should be treated seriously and precautions should be made about the diet you take at the time of pregnancy to prevent high blood sugar levels.
